\u2026The individual social worker and the profession as a whole need to be clear about what they approve and disapprove. Social workers, in order to be effective in helping people, must ally themselves with the civil law, with the moral law, and with social and economic standards which promote decency and dignity in human affairs. Clarity in this area contributes to professional maturity.
The role of the caseworker is to help the client proceed from a situation which is undesirable and unacceptable to a situation which is desirable and acceptable. Therefore some standard of right and wrong, of good and bad, is implicit in every case. The violation of the moral law by the unmarried mother, the violation of civil law by the parolee, the emotional rejection of her child by a mother seeking help in a child-guidance clinic, the breakup of a family through divorce, the fears which prevent the person from employment-all of these are undesirable. It is therefore ridiculous to think that the caseworker’s duty is to approve of everything about the client. The client comes for help because he is unhappy about something in his life;he does not approve of everything in himself.
The caseworker must nevertheless accept the client and everything about the client that is pertinent to the helping process. The caseworker must accept even those elements of which he disapproves. He accepts the unmarried mother’s verbalization about her ambivalence about sexual behavior, in the technical sense of acceptance, which means that her ambivalence is real, is pertinent to her problem, and is discussed with a therapeutic purpose. He accepts the parolee’s negative attitudes to law, to law enforcement officers, to his past imprisonment, and to the parole regulations. Even though the caseworker is duty-bound to be allied with the law, he accepts the parolee’s attitudes because they are a part of the problem and need to be aired out, clarified, and straightened out. He accepts the verbal protestations of the rejecting mother to the effect that she is a good mother and not at all responsible for her child’s problems, because she needs help in gaining insight into her unsatisfactory relationship with her child.
Acceptance, therefore, is a technical term. The object of acceptance is reality; the caseworker perceives and deals with the client as he is in reality. The client’s congenial and uncongenial qualities, his positive and negative feelings, his acceptable and unacceptable attitudes and behavior, need to be perceived and dealt with both by the client and the caseworker. Otherwise, casework becomes an unreal, make-believe situation. As the physician accepts every pertinent bit of information about the patient’s physical health, the caseworker in like manner accepts everything pertinent about the client’s psychosocial health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
